Agent Advice: 5 of the Best Things To Do in the Caribbean
Our clients absolutely love going to the Caribbean. The white sandy beaches, the bright blue sea, the easy-going attitude. Plus, it’s just a quick ride from Myrtle Beach or Charleston. It’s the perfect getaway for those who can’t take weeks off to go to Europe or Asia. You have most of the comforts of home at many resorts, too. But we like to recommend that you get off the beaten path while there, too. Here are our favorite things to do in the Caribbean:
1. Take a sunset cruise
It might seem cheesy, but believe us, when you’re out in the open water and watching that big sun sink below the horizon with a white wine in your hand, you won’t feel that way. These sunsets are among the best in the world and the best place to see them is from the water.
2. Snorkel or scuba dive
The Caribbean is home to really beautiful, vibrant coral reefs and thousands of species of fish. If you’re staying on land, you haven’t even scratched the surface of the beauty this region holds. If you’re certified, scuba diving is wonderful on many islands. Many even have some caverns you can explore. If you’re more of a snorkeler, almost every destination has a popular place to get your flippers on. Since it’s so warm, you’ll rarely (if ever) need a full bodysuit. Just be sure to wear a life jacket!
3. Taste the Traditional Fare
Sure, your resort might have five-star dining, but there is some great fare to be tried on many of the Caribbean islands. Among our favorite dishes: fried plantains, jerk chicken and callaloo if you want to get your veggie on.
4. See the islands by air
It’s not all just water toys. Air travel is one of the best things to do in the Caribbean. You can go parasailing, which is a really calming experience (even though it may not seem it when you’re watching from the beach). You can also take a water plane. Islands with ancient volcanoes, like St. Lucia, also offer helicopter tours. It’s a great way to see the expansiveness of the sea and vegetation on the island.
5. One word: Rum
Of course, we can’t forget one of the Caribbean’s most delicious exports: Rum! Many countries, like the Grand Cayman and San Juan offer rum distillery tours and you just have to taste the rum cakes as well. There’s no shortage of this adult beverage on any beach and any bartender will know how to make you a delicious concoction, so don’t hold back. After all, you’re on vacation!
