Reasons You’ll Want to Cruise South American (Besides the Obvious)

If you haven’t noticed yet, we’re proud to announce the offering of our 14-Night South America cruise! Thomas Hogan Travel is teaming up with Princess Cruises to offer this warm cruise from the South Atlantic Ocean around the Cape of Africa to the South Pacific Ocean. If this trip sounds like a dream, you can secure your spot for only $100 down. Now that we have your attention, let’s delve into the itinerary and must-see destinations on this cruise.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

You’ll fly into the cosmopolitan capital city, Buenos Aires, lined with 19th-century buildings and historic sites. The Plaza de Mayo is the city’s central landmark and primary landmark where you’ll have vast photo ops. From the Plaza de Mayo, take just a 3-minute walk to the Casa Rosada, the executive office and mansion of the President of Argentina. If you want a taste of Argentina culture, take a walk down La Boca where artists line the streets and restaurants will light up your taste buds. You’ll also find a modern art museum with rotating exhibits. No matter where you go in Buenos Aires, you’ll find an array of dancing, cuisine, and art that will be more than satisfying.

Puerto Madryn

After leaving Buenos Aires, you’ll sail to Puerto Madryn, a coastal town in the Patagonia region. This northern Patagonia city boasts sandy beaches lined with decadent restaurants. Perhaps its highlight is its clifftop museum which exhibits local nature and has a lighthouse-style tower for unparalleled ocean views. Across the bay rests a rocky peninsula, which is home to orcas, elephant seals, and penguins. You don’t want to miss this turquoise water filled coastal town.

Cape Horn

The Cape Horn is an incredible headland in southern Chile’s archipelago. You’ll see an awe-inspiring view on the tip of South America which mimics a 3D geographical view of the southern tip, unlike anything else you’ll ever see. As you sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean, you’ll see voluminous peaks and waves crashing against the rocks.

Ushuaia

Nicknamed “The End of the World,” Ushuaia is a resort-style town on the southernmost tip of South America. It’s a windswept town perched on a hill that’s home to many penguins who enjoy the cooler temperatures. In fact, Ushuaia translates to “deep bay” which is extremely fitting given the bowl-shaped geography of this industrial town.

Punta Arenas

Not far from Ushuaia is Punta Arenas which rests on the Strait of Magellan. Here, you’ll find a memorial for Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan, historical museums, and a lovely sea of bright blue water surrounded by jagged mountains and rustic terrain. From exploring the natural sights to delving into museums, you’ll have a wide selection of fun activities awaiting you here. As you continue sailing around the South Pacific Ocean, you’ll see a phenomenal tidewater glacier, Amalia Glacier, which originated in the Southern Patagonia Ice Field.  This gigantic glacier presents wonderful photo opportunities.

Puerto Montt, Chile

Second to last on the South American cruise is a stop in Puerto Montt, a gateway to the Andes Mountains and Patagonian fjords. It hosts an infamous art museum, Case de Arte Diego Rivera, which showcases work by local and national artists. Just outside the city limits rests an open-air fish market and an active volcano.

Santiago, Chile: Last but certainly not least, on the cruise includes a stop in Santiago. This dreamy town rests in a snow-capped valley surrounded by the incredible Andes mountains. Santiago is home to Chile’s Natural History Museum and the Metropolitan Cathedral. The core of the city hosts neoclassical architecture, including the Natural History Museum, art deco, and winding side streets. As one of the largest cities in the Americas, Santiago is the heart of political, financial, and cultural activities. On the outskirts rests stunning hills, parks, and vineyards. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a city person, or a bit of both, you’ll find endless adventure in Santiago.
